The breadth of the alert marks a notable expansion. An earlier IDEAM advisory, carried by Radio Nacional de Colombia, had placed 114 municipalities under alert for vegetation fire threats. The figure from Semana's report - 158 municipalities - represents the more recent count.
The conditions driving both alerts are the same. Vanguardia reports that El Niño has caused continuous temperature increases and extended drought periods across Colombia, a combination that prompted a health alert alongside the fire-risk warnings.
What would clarify the picture is a municipality-level breakdown showing which areas moved from the earlier 114-municipality list into the expanded 158-municipality one, and whether IDEAM has set thresholds that would scale the alert back down.
