Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused Prime Minister Andy Burnham of 'kicking defence spending into the long grass' during a press conference in central London. ^[1] Badenoch stated that a Conservative government would fund a commitment to reach 3% of GDP on defence by 2030, which is worth approximately £10bn a year. ^[2] Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government has only committed to setting out a plan in the spring to meet the Nato target of spending 3.5% of GDP on defence by 2035. ^[3] To fund the 3% defence target, Badenoch proposed measures including reimposing the two-child benefit cap, reforming housing benefit, and ending VAT exemptions for Motability cars. ^[4] Kemi Badenoch delivered a speech to the House of Commons outlining a Conservative plan to increase defence spending funded by cuts to welfare. ^[5] Kemi Badenoch's plan to raise a further £10bn a year from welfare cuts on top of the previously announced £23bn was described as implausible by the author. ^[6] Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed that Britain needs to spend more on defence and less on welfare, phrasing the latter as investing in young people's success rather than paying for failure. ^[7] Chancellor John Healey stated that the government must wait until next year to determine if he will agree to the 3 per cent defence spending target again. ^[8]
