A new report by the U.N. children's charity UNICEF estimated that about 20 million internet-using children across 21 countries were subjected to sexual exploitation or abuse on digital platforms in a single year. ^[1] A global initiative to establish a stockpile of mpox vaccines was launched on 2026-08-27 to create a long-term mechanism for ensuring country access to vaccines during outbreaks. ^[2] Across nine countries where data was collected, an estimated 1.1 million children reported having AI-generated sexual images or videos created depicting them. ^[3] More than one in five children aged 12 to 17 across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe experienced at least one form of sexual abuse or exploitation on online platforms in the year before being surveyed. ^[4] Roughly 15 million children in the surveyed countries were exposed to unwanted sexual content, 9 million were pressured into sexual conversations or sharing sexual images, and 4 million had sexual images shared without their consent. ^[5] The initiative builds on the Access and Allocation Mechanism established in 2024 during the last mpox Public Health Emergency of International Concern. ^[6] The new global mpox vaccine stockpile is funded by Gavi and coordinated by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, which partners with the IFRC, MSF, UNICEF, and WHO. ^[7] Two-thirds of the reported mpox cases occurred in the African Region during the specified period. ^[8]
