Mandeep Singh, a resident of Shaheed Udham Singh locality, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly tying a torn page of the holy scripture Gutka Sahib to the rear flap of a Sikh woman's suit inside the Golden Temple complex. ^[1] Surinder Singh, a new subedar of the NSG stationed in Nagaland, reported that his bag was stolen from him. ^[2] Assistant Commissioner of Police Surinder Singh stated that the arrest was made after a complaint from Simarjit Singh, a helper for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, and an FIR was registered at the Kotwali police station. ^[3] The incident occurred inside the Akal Takht Sahib, where the accused was seated behind an elderly Sikh woman during prayers before the husband discovered the torn 'ang' tied to her clothing. ^[4] During the altercation, the driver allegedly stole a Titan watch and some food items from the colonel's bag. ^[5] Surinder Singh hired an auto driver on August 26 to travel from Tundla Station to his home. ^[6] The auto driver allegedly dropped Surinder Singh off at Rambag Chowk after they got into a verbal altercation. ^[7] SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Manan condemned the act and suggested preliminary findings indicate the page was torn outside the complex before being brought inside. ^[8]
