"headline": "TU Graz activates 1.25MW hydrogen engine to power campus",
"dek": "TU Graz officially inaugurated a zero-impact hydrogen engine demonstrator to supply campus power.",
"prose": "The Technical University of Graz officially inaugurated a zero-impact hydrogen engine demonstrator at the Large Engines Competence Center (LEC) on the Inffeldgasse campus on a Monday. [^1]\n\nMarcus Ossiander of TU Graz said the light conversion is 72,000 times more efficient at wavelengths used in telecommunications, representing a huge leap over technology used over the past 30 to 40 years and enabling smaller components and lower energy consumption in data centers. [^2]\n\nResearchers from Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), Harvard University, and the University of Texas at Austin developed a method combining a semiconductor layer with a metasurface that converts light into new frequencies around 72,000 times more efficiently than previous materials. [^3]\n\nProfessor Nicole Wermuth, scientific director at the LEC, explained that the technology achieves a 97 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, with the remaining three percent stemming from hydrogen production and transport. [^4]\n\nThe new hydrogen engine is designed to generate up to 1.25 megawatts of electrical power and up to 1.5 megawatts of thermal power to cover part of the TU Graz's energy demand. [^5]\n\nThomas Jauk, managing director of the LEC, stated that total investments in the demonstrator amount to between 10 and 12 million euros, a figure accumulated since planning began in 2018. [^6]\n\nExperiments showed that light striking the component in a perfectly straight line causes the optical fields to cancel due to geometric symmetry, while tilting the sample by 0.3 degrees breaks the symmetry and enables highly efficient non-linear polarization.
