Barbara Fidler of Worthington, Ohio, started a GoFundMe campaign for Pierre Damas Bel's family after her husband witnessed the aftermath of the student's death on Interstate 70 on August 31, 2026. ^[1] Bel's father alleged that the ankle monitor was the primary factor in his son's death and that Bel felt treated like an animal after being bullied by classmates at Wright State University. ^[2] Bel's family stated that he became increasingly depressed after Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued him an ankle monitor in late July 2026. ^[3] Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian immigrant and student at Wright State University in Springfield, Ohio, died by suicide in July 2026. ^[4] Pastor Carl Ruby of Central Christian Church stated at a press conference that authorities removed Bel's ankle monitor before the family could view his body. ^[5] Yola Lamarre, a mentor with the Haitian Community Network, told CNN that Bel shared depressive thoughts with her in the weeks after the ankle monitor policy began targeting Haitians in Springfield. ^[6] Bel made a video call to his father on Monday morning expressing distress and stating that bullies were affecting his mental state before he died. ^[7] Bel's father reported that the ankle monitor prevented his son from playing soccer and stopped him from getting a new ROTC uniform. ^[8]
