Iran struck back at US assets in Jordan, Bahrain, and Iraq, with the IRGC claiming a large number of US forces were killed in a missile attack on a Jordan base. ^[1] The US military completed a wave of airstrikes against Iran on Tuesday, targeting IRGC air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications sites. ^[2] US Central Command (CENTCOM) fired on IRGC positions on Larak Island late on August 30 to intercept and destroy two Iranian missiles that were about to be launched. ^[3] The U.S. military announced on Tuesday that it is striking targets in Iran as hostilities have flared again after a month without military action. ^[4] The US military launched a second strike against Iran on April 1, targeting IRGC facilities in the Hormuz Strait. ^[5] An Axios report citing US officials stated that the US military attacked two Iranian government tankers during the Tuesday strikes. ^[6] Global oil prices rose more than $4 a barrel on Tuesday, settling at a five-week high due to the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. ^[7] Donald Trump announced that the mines had been cleared from the Strait of Hormuz and stated that Iran has been notified of a Zero Tolerance policy on mine placement. ^[8] The target of the attack appears to have been one or more IRGC Fajr-5 rocket systems, which can be used to deploy sea mines. ^[9] On Sunday, the U.S. military struck rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran responded by launching missiles at U.S. sites in Jordan which were intercepted. ^[10] President Donald Trump acknowledged Monday that more strikes might be necessary and asserted that U.S. and Israeli bombardment has left Iran a failed nation with much of its political leadership killed. ^[11] U.S. Central Command stated that the strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region. ^[12]
