The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Indonesia is developing a Groundwater Level (GWL) monitoring system to reduce the risk of forest and land fires, especially on peatlands. ^[1] PT Circular Waste Management (CWM) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) signed a Research and Innovation Techno-Economic Agreement for Waste Management and Resource Recovery in Jakarta on September 1. ^[2] Albertus Sulaiman emphasized that groundwater monitoring is vital for risk reduction because shifts in water levels provide early indicators of potential fires, with smoke indicators usually following when the water table approaches or drops below critical thresholds. ^[3] Albertus Sulaiman noted that the system will track carbon emissions from peatlands and serve as an early warning system to determine when land is becoming vulnerable to fires. ^[4] Albertus Sulaiman, head of BRIN's Climate and Atmosphere Research Center, stated in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday that the GWL system will monitor water conditions in peatlands to identify changes signaling increased fire risk. ^[5] Ario Betha Juanssilfero, Head of the Environmental and Clean Technology Research Center at BRIN, and Yamin Pakaya, Director of PT Circular Waste Management, signed the agreement. ^[6] The research will generate performance datasets for pilot plants and subsurface mapping datasets for final landfills (TPA) using drone georadar technology. ^[7] Yamin Pakaya stated that the collaboration serves as a research foundation to produce scientific evidence regarding the performance, feasibility, and application potential of waste processing technologies suited to Indonesia's characteristics. ^[8]
