According to Nigerian press, 43 people died as a result of the toxic gas leak at Okari Jetty. ^[1] Not less than 37 persons suspected of oil theft died after inhaling petroleum fumes at Okari Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State. ^[2] Nigerian press reported that some individuals who fainted during the incident fell into the river and are missing. ^[3] Rivers State Police Spokesperson Agabe Blessing Karbalo said that the deceased and poisoned individuals were attempting to steal petrol at the time of the incident. ^[4] Fyneface Dumnamene, Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC) - Nigeria, confirmed that no fewer than 37 persons suspected of oil theft died after inhaling what was locally called Indorama fuel. ^[5] The incident occurred at about midnight on Thursday at Okari Jetty in the Okrika Mainland area, where victims connected a pipe to a tapping point on a pipeline transporting petroleum products from the Indorama Eleme Petrochemical facility. ^[6] The statement from YEAC noted that while a vessel was loading the product, the men simultaneously loading into their waiting boats inhaled the product being pumped at high pressure, leading to the deaths. ^[7]
