California and 11 other states joined the Writers Guild of America in urging a federal court judge to deny Paramount Skydance's request for a US$1.88 billion bond to address the cost of delay in completing its acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery. ^[1] A group of Jewish artists, writers, creative professionals, faith leaders, and thinkers signed an open letter titled 'Enough!' in defense of Mark Ruffalo against accusations of antisemitism. ^[2] Mark Ruffalo, a longtime advocate for Palestinian rights, was accused by media giant Paramount Skydance of invoking 'antisemitic tropes' in his criticism of its $111 billion merger with Warner Bros Discovery. ^[3] California argued that any damages Paramount has incurred from delays in closing the Warner Bros deal are self-imposed and that the court should reject any effort to shift the burden to the public and a non-profit union. ^[4] California Attorney General Rob Bonta argued in a court filing on August 31 that Paramount willingly offered to pay Warner Bros shareholders a daily fee and voluntarily agreed to refrain from closing the merger until the antitrust case is resolved or June 1, 2027. ^[5] The letter states that Larry Ellison is the largest donor in history to the nonprofit Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. ^[6] The signatories cite a Washington Post poll finding that 61% of American Jews agree that Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza. ^[7] Paramount argued that the states should not get a free pass from requirements to post a bond against the harms caused if their legal challenge ultimately fails. ^[8]
