Colombian Finance Minister Miguel Gómez stated that the government requested Congress return the 2027 budget articulation because the financial assumptions proposed by the previous Petro administration were erroneous. ^[1] If Congress does not debate or issue the final text before midnight on October 20, the 2027 budget will be enacted by decree through the initial Ministry of Finance presentation. ^[2] The Senate and Chamber plenaries must approve the articulation in its entirety by October 20. ^[3] Colombia's Finance Minister Miguel Gómez warned the Congress that the country faces a severe deterioration of public finances with a monthly spending gap of over $11 trillion pesos. ^[4] The new 2027 budget project presented by the Ministry of Finance amounts to $634.9 trillion pesos, which is nearly $60 trillion pesos more than the initiative from the previous government. ^[5] Miguel Gómez stated that the state collects an average monthly income of $29 trillion pesos but expenses reach more than $40 trillion pesos, a difference covered only by debt. ^[6] Miguel Gómez warned that without action, public debt would reach an unsustainable level, leading to accelerated currency devaluation, economic growth slowdown, and recession. ^[7]
