Edelson PC, the law firm that represented Tumbler Ridge shooting victims in seven earlier April lawsuits against OpenAI, filed 30 new complaints in a California court, adding teachers, a principal, and students who were in the building during the attack but not physically shot. ^[1] On 2026-02-10, teenager Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and half-brother at home, then went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and killed six more people and injured dozens before dying by suicide. ^[2] The new lawsuits allege that OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot induced the shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, to carry out the attack in rural Canada in February. ^[3] The new complaints name OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane as the person who told staff to stand down and not contact authorities, though they offer no direct evidence and OpenAI denied his involvement. ^[4] The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI staff had been alarmed by Van Rootselaar's ChatGPT use, including conversations about gun violence and attack planning, and urged leaders to alert Canadian law enforcement, but leaders instead deactivated her account. ^[5] The February attack in Tumbler Ridge resulted in eight deaths and dozens of injuries, most of whom were children. ^[6] These new lawsuits bring the total number of cases against OpenAI for the Tumbler Ridge shooting to 37, following seven initial suits filed in April. ^[7]
