Marine scientist Tom Hird said in an interview with Metro that warmer waters are forcing sharks to move north from their usual habitats, and that the Mediterranean Sea is close enough for them to reach. ^[1] Scientists behind a new study suggest that climate change is causing great white sharks and hammerheads to migrate into European waters, including areas where they have not been previously recorded. ^[2] The BBC reported that a group of underwater explorers recorded the first underwater footage of a great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea in May 2026. ^[3] British waters have warmed by approximately 0.3 degrees Celsius per decade over the last ten years, causing marine life to alter their natural habitats. ^[4] In 2025, there were 65 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks worldwide, resulting in nine deaths. ^[5] Rare footage of an adult white shark was captured in the Mediterranean Sea between Tunisia and Sicily during a dive aimed at highlighting ghost fishing nets. ^[6] Tom Hird, a marine scientist and shark expert, stated that sharks must move to areas with suitable temperatures as oceans warm. ^[7] The Telegraph reported that the International Shark Attack File recorded only 65 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide in the past year, nine of which were fatal. ^[8]
