Livestock such as cattle, goats, and sheep are being used to stomp down and consume tall grasses and shrubs to lower wildfire risk in grasslands across the American West. ^[1] Targeted grazing involves intentionally using livestock such as cattle, goats, and sheep to stomp down tall grasses and munch vegetation that could otherwise fuel catastrophic wildfires. ^[2] Leaders of the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management are pushing for more targeted grazing in national forests as part of the 2025 Grazing Action Plan. ^[3] The practice of intentionally using livestock for wildfire control is known as targeted grazing and is gaining attention due to severe wildfire seasons. ^[4] A survey of over 1,000 U.S. Forest Service staff found that a majority believe targeted grazing can be at least moderately effective for wildfire risk management. ^[5]
