Reported test purchases of the Robinhood memecoin Dogwifhat (WIF) through the payments firm Crossmint were posted on Visa and Mastercard as digital media rather than cryptocurrency. ^[1] Crossmint announced in its press release the launch of its global onramp across more than 160 countries, allowing fintechs to offer users wallet funding via Apple Pay, Google Pay, or cards within their apps. ^[2] Chase stated that the wrong merchant code was used and that the points should never have landed because its rewards agreement rules out cash-like spending and names cryptocurrency. ^[3] Crossmint processes the transaction as 'digital goods' instead of crypto, resulting in a merchant code of 5815 which covers books, films, and music sold online. ^[4] Robinhood Wallet and Fomo allow users to buy memecoins directly with Visa, Mastercard, or Apple Pay without a separate KYC check. ^[5] Crossmint handles KYC, sanctions and AML screening, wallet screening, Travel Rule obligations, and card transaction disputes, and assumes chargeback liability, acting as a single counterparty across the money movement stack. ^[6] Crossmint said its Onramp addresses shortcomings of existing solutions including low acceptance rates, disjointed user experiences, and lengthy onboarding processes that drive drop-off during first-time funding. ^[7] Crossmint's European entity is authorized as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) and as a Payment Institution under the Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2). ^[8]
