More than 5,000 deaths attributed to heat have been recorded in Spain from June 1st to August 31st, representing a record for this period since data collection began in 2015. ^[1] Marcelo Molina, a correspondent, stated that Spain's summer was officially the hottest and deadliest on record, resulting in 5,111 deaths linked to extreme heat. ^[2] The number of heat-related deaths in Spain reached 5,111, exceeding the previous record of 4,790 deaths set in 2022. ^[3] MTN Group president and CEO Ralph Mupita stated that the MoMo mobile payment platform processed over $330bn in transaction value during the first half of 2026. ^[4] July 2026 was recorded as the hottest month in Spain since data collection began in 1961, coinciding with unprecedented wildfires. ^[5] The Carlos III Health Institute, based in Madrid, attributed 2,149 deaths in August, 2,025 in July, and 937 in June to heat. ^[6] The previous record for heat-related deaths during this three-month period was set in 2022 with 4,652 deaths. ^[7] According to the data presented by Molina, 97% of the 5,111 deceased individuals were over the age of 65. ^[8] Marcelo Molina explained that the 5,111 deaths were identified using the MOMO system, implemented in 2015 to analyze daily deaths and detect those related to extreme temperature events. ^[9] MTN's MoMo platform reported 70.8-million monthly active users and 2.3-million merchants accepting mobile money daily as of the interim results for the six months to June 2026. ^[10] Ralph Mupita explained that MTN is shifting its revenue mix away from basic services like cash-in and cash-out towards higher-value digital financial products to improve monetization. ^[11] MTN's partnership with Mastercard, which included a R3.8bn investment in early 2024, has enabled the issuance of close to a million virtual and physical companion cards. ^[12]
