Professor Wu Ziyin and his research group at the Second Institute of Oceanography produced detailed seabed maps of the South China Sea that offer roughly double the resolution of leading global alternatives. ^[1] The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting stated on September 5, 2026, that the South China Sea is likely to see 2-3 storms and tropical depressions in September 2026. ^[2] The achievement resulted from reconciling huge amounts of older information collected by different vessels, instruments, and mapping systems over more than two decades. ^[3] The new Chinese seabed maps can be two to five times more accurate than existing global models, allowing for the precise pinpointing of smaller underwater formations. ^[4] The current El Nino phenomenon is maintaining a strong intensity as of September 5, 2026. ^[5] The El Nino event is projected to maintain strong to very strong intensity through the last months of 2026 with a 95% probability. ^[6] The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that 1-2 of the predicted storms may affect the mainland of Vietnam. ^[7] Professor Wu Ziyin stated that the program produced domestically designed multi-beam sonar equipment and autonomous underwater vehicles capable of surveying at depths approaching 6,000 metres. ^[8]
