Today marks the 20th anniversary of the last time a President of the Republic attempted to present themselves before Congress to submit their Government Report on September 1st. ^[1] The author asserts that Mexico's foreign direct investment in the first half of 2026 was $35 billion, lower than the $37.7 billion in 2025 and $36.2 billion in 2024. ^[2] President Fox was repelled and expelled by an aggressive Lopez Obradorist and PRD parliamentary bloc that did not accept the defeat in an election that the Tabasco-born leader should have won but lost due to ineptitude and arrogance. ^[3] Since 2006, nothing outstanding has occurred on September 1st, the Day of the President, as President Calderón, Peña Nieto, and López Obrador attempted to revive it without much enthusiasm and in formats that leave no memory. ^[4] Segalmex, a Mexican food security agency, was privatized but functions as a public dependency that allegedly enriched a group of corrupt officials. ^[5] The author asserts that the current administration under López Obrador has committed significantly more corruption than the previous administration under Peña Nieto. ^[6] The author states that several officials involved in the Segalmex corruption case are currently in prison, while one remains at large fearing arrest. ^[7] The columnist claims that the corruption at Segalmex is the largest act of corruption committed in modern Mexico, surpassing previous administrations. ^[8] The author asserts that in June 2024 Mexico had 33 million informal workers and almost 28 million formal workers, and that if that ratio had held, there should have been 34 million formal workers in June 2026, but the actual number was 27.7 million. ^[9] The author asserts that of the $35 billion in foreign direct investment in the first half of 2026, only $2.7 billion was new investment, with the majority being reinvestment of profits, and that this new investment level is practically the lowest in the century. ^[10] The author suggests that the country which paused politically 20 years ago has ceased to exist, explaining why no one misses the old ritual of the President addressing the Congress. ^[11]
