The European Commission announced on Monday that it will suspend imports of beef and poultry from Brazil starting this Thursday. ^[1] DHL Global Forwarding, the freight management arm of DHL Group, announced the acquisition of Uruguay-based Aero Cargas S.A., giving the company its first direct operation in Uruguay. ^[2] The European Commission reproached Brazil for not providing sufficient guarantees regarding the respect of EU health rules. ^[3] The European Union suspended Brazil from the list of countries respecting EU rules on the intensive use of antibiotics in the livestock industry in May. ^[4] DHL Global Forwarding said the investment in Aero Cargas was motivated by Uruguay's potential to capture more trade flows given its position as an Atlantic gateway to the Mercosur trade bloc, with the Port of Montevideo at the entrance to the primary inland waterway that flows past Buenos Aires. ^[5] The government of Uruguay said Uruguay exported $13.5 billion in goods during 2025, the highest figure in 10 years, driven by beef, soybeans and dairy. ^[6] The suspension of imports also affects eggs and honey from Brazil. ^[7] Aero Cargas S.A. has served as a DHL agent in Uruguay for more than 30 years, arranging air and ocean freight, project cargo, land transport and customized multimodal services, according to a DHL news release. ^[8]
