The Santa Ana wind season is approaching in Baja California, characterized by strong gusts, high temperatures, and a marked decrease in humidity. ^[1] The Comisión Nacional de Búsqueda (National Search Commission) presented Molly, a female dog, as part of its K9 canine unit to search for missing persons. ^[2] As of September 1, 2026, Chiapas accumulated 5,766 tremors, equivalent to 20.78% of the 27,849 recorded in Mexico, placing it in second place nationally. ^[3] Avith Mendoza Ponce, a seismologist at the Center for Volcanological and Seismological Monitoring of the UNICACH, warned that Chiapas needs to expand its sensor network to better identify high-risk zones and potential large-magnitude movements. ^[4] Chiapas currently has four stations from the National Seismological Service, whereas Oaxaca has approximately 11 stations, a difference that influences the number of detected movements. ^[5] During a Santa Ana condition in January 2025, firefighters in Tijuana responded to 32 fires in a single day, while 15 homes were consumed by flames in the Cumbres del Rubí neighborhood. ^[6] The Centro Nacional de Prevención de Desastres (Cenapred) states that Santa Ana winds affect southern California, USA, and northern Baja California, Mexico, during autumn and early winter. ^[7] According to the Guardia Nacional, K9 binomios are key for searching and detecting illicit substances, inspections at checkpoints, and, in Molly's case, searching for people. ^[8] Molly will have a team of people who will plan, coordinate, and analyze information to enable her work. ^[9] The Comisión Nacional de Búsqueda stated on social media that it is prepared for search work on land and underwater fields. ^[10] Ana Lucía López Pimentel, director of the Institute for Research in Risk Management and Climate Change at the UNICACH, announced the XVII Earth Sciences Week to be held from September 7 to 11. ^[11]
