The consortium pivoted to exporting the invasive blue crabs, and as of 2026 it has sold every crab it caught, eliminating the need for incineration, and forecasts 20 million euros ($23 million) in revenue for 2026, most from crab sales. ^[1] The Polesine Fishermen's Cooperative Consortium's revenues fell 75% to 15 million euros ($17 million) in 2024 and 2025, and its active members shrank from 1,500 to 850, after the invasive Atlantic blue crab decimated the Manila clam population in the Po River Delta. ^[2] Piero Genovesi, an invasive species expert at Italy's environmental protection institute, said the Atlantic blue crab has been present in the Adriatic Sea since at least the 1940s, arriving in ballast water from commercial vessels. ^[3] The Scardovari consortium and Sri Lankan company Taprobane Seafoods have a joint venture that ships steamed, frozen crabs to Sri Lanka, where workers remove the meat by hand, and Taprobane forecasts large-scale retail expansion in Italy and Europe. ^[4] The Italian government's blue crab eradication program, which paid fishermen to catch and incinerate nearly 2.3 million kilograms of crabs over two years, has been shelved. ^[5]
