The Dominican Republic's General Directorate of Livestock (Digega) reported that African swine fever outbreaks fell 85.1% in June 2026, from 181 in June 2025 to 27 in June 2026. ^[1] Between January and July, African Swine Fever cases in the Dominican Republic fell from 472 in 2025 to 114 in the current year, representing a 75.8% reduction. ^[2] Abel Madera, the head of the Dirección General de Ganadería (Digega), stated that government compensation for African Swine Fever affected producers is projected to drop from approximately RD$350 million in 2025 to around RD$60 million in 2026. ^[3] The Dirección General de Ganadería reported that only 27 cases of African Swine Fever were recorded between June and July 2026, compared to 132 cases in the same period of 2025. ^[4] Abel Madera warned that the decrease in cases should not lead to reduced efforts, as the virus can return if investment and producer interest wane. ^[5] Abel Madera, the general director of Livestock, stated that the decrease in the disease has been significant. ^[6] In June, the month with the highest peak in the analyzed period, cases dropped from 181 in 2025 to 27 in the current year. ^[7] Abel Madera explained that the reduction in cases reflects the results of prevention and control protocols applied by authorities, including the control of animal movement and specialized brigades. ^[8] Abel Madera warned that African Swine Fever continues to represent a risk to pork production because the virus is highly resistant and there is no vaccine against it. ^[9]
