A team of astronomers discovered a 10-sided polygonal atmospheric structure, called a decagon, near Saturn's south pole, and the discovery was published in the journal Science Advances. ^[1] NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured a giant, 10-sided atmospheric wave encircling the south pole of Saturn, described as a decagon. ^[2] A single side of the decagon exceeds 10,000 miles (16,700 kilometres) in length. ^[3] Each side of the decagon measures approximately 16,800 kilometers, which is longer than Earth's diameter. ^[4] Scientists traced subtle signs of the pattern back to 2023, noting it has become increasingly distinct since then. ^[5] The decagon is a cloud pattern, not a solid structure, because Saturn has no defined solid surface; descending through its atmosphere would never reach a ground. ^[6] The decagon joins Saturn's known hexagonal cloud pattern at the north pole, which was first observed 44 years ago. ^[7] The discovery is the first time a large, regular-sided jet pattern has been observed in Saturn's southern hemisphere. ^[8]
