During the Medayoung festival in Medellín on 2025-08-29, attendees shouted the chant 'Abelardo, gonorrea, el pueblo no copea,' an insult directed at President Abelardo De La Espriella. ^[1] Medellín Youth Secretary Ricardo Jaramillo responded that public events are by definition for everyone, that he cannot ask attendees for proof of their vote, that his administration does not govern only for those who share its views, and that he does not agree with the chant. ^[2] Political activist Thomás Piedrahita expressed indignation over the chant and demanded explanations from Mayor Federico Gutiérrez and Youth Secretary Ricardo Jaramillo, stating that such public spaces should not be funded with paisas' money if they are used to insult and incite hatred against the national government. ^[3] Approximately 25% of young people in Medellin report feeling lonely, while 27% lost contact with most of their friends over the past year. ^[4] Four in ten young people spend more than six hours a day using their cellphone, a figure cited by Ricardo Jaramillo, Medellin's Secretary of Youth. ^[5] Medellin's Youth Well-Being Measurement surveyed 3,056 young people aged 14 to 28 across 16 urban districts and five rural townships to assess living conditions and support networks. ^[6] Nearly 90% of the surveyed youth believe their personal situation will be better in five years. ^[7] Jaramillo also affirmed his belief in the government of President Abelardo De La Espriella and José Manuel Restrepo, defended free expression as a constitutional right, and stated that 'we are not the enemies.' ^[8]
