Researchers Ditmar Kurtz and Griselda Saucedo from the Grupo RRNN - EEA del INTA Corrientes reported that water coverage in the province of Corrientes reached 2.398.090 hectares by June 30, 2026. ^[1] INTA, Argentina's National Institute of Agricultural Technology, grew fresh vegetables including spinach, lettuce, arugula, chard, and aromatic herbs at the Argentine Antarctic Base Esperanza using hydroponic modules, reducing the base's dependence on frozen, dried, and canned foods. ^[2] The 27% water coverage figure is still below the 38% considered the historical normal value for the region. ^[3] The current water presence in Corrientes equates to approximately 27% of the provincial territory. ^[4] The water surface area in Corrientes province recovered by 591.617 hectares compared to the minimum recorded in April 2026. ^[5] The Antarctic Hydroponic Production Module (MAPHI) at Base Esperanza supplies fresh vegetables to a crew of 58 people stationed at the base. ^[6] The development began from a consultation raised at Base Carlini and advanced to Base Marambio, where INTA inaugurated the first hydroponic module in 2022; the technology was installed at Base Esperanza in 2023 and at Base Belgrano in 2024. ^[7] The hydroponic system operates without soil, using phenolic foam, nutrient-enriched water, and LED lamps in a closed circuit that recycles water, which is especially valuable where most water is frozen. ^[8]
