Analí Márquez, a deputy from the Juntos por el Perú party, presented a bill to modify the National Police Law of Peru to allow the removal of the general commander before the term ends. ^[1] Juan Sheput, Peru's Minister of Labor, reaffirmed his opposition to the continued tenure of Óscar Arriola as the commander general of the National Police (PNP). ^[2] Interior Minister César Astudillo acknowledged that the executive branch does not currently have a legal margin to order the departure of Óscar Arriola before completing the two years established for his tenure. ^[3] The current commander general of the National Police is Óscar Arriola, whose term is scheduled to end in September 2027 according to Law 31570. ^[4] The proposed bill allows the president of the Republic to remove the general commander of the National Police via a supreme resolution based on lack of trust, lack of suitability, poor operational performance, or failure to meet citizen security goals. ^[5] Ministers Marco Vinelli and Rafael Belaúnde avoided directly questioning the management of Police Chief Óscar Arriola and leaned towards supporting his continuity. ^[6] Sheput clarified that the final decision regarding Arriola's continuity corresponds to Interior Minister César Astudillo. ^[7] Sheput stated in an interview with El Comercio that his position responds to controversial situations involving the police chief and that he will not retreat from his stance. ^[8]
