Eurostat reported that European Union member states produced a total of 34.4 billion litres of beer throughout 2025. ^[1] Germany maintained its position as the leading beer producer in the EU during 2025, brewing 7.4 billion litres across the twelve-month period. ^[2] Eurostat data places Romania on the penultimate spot in the European Union for life expectancy after age 65, with an average duration of 16.3 years. ^[3] Eurostat data shows Bulgarian households spent 22.3% of their budgets on food in 2024, compared to the EU average of 16.3%. ^[4] Food, home bills, and transport together account for 46.5% of Bulgarian household spending, according to Eurostat data. ^[5] Spain secured the second rank among member states, contributing 5.3 billion litres to represent 15.5 per cent of the total EU volume. ^[6] Total EU beer production in 2025 represented a slight decline of 0.7 per cent compared to the volume recorded in 2024. ^[7] A pensioner in Spain or Switzerland lives, on average, 17 to 19 years after retirement, meaning a Romanian pensioner lives about half as long. ^[8] Romania ranks last in the EU for healthy life expectancy after 65, with men expecting only 4 years without disability compared to the EU average of 9 years. ^[9] Romanian men retiring at the legal age of 65 live, on average, only 6 to 7.9 years longer, while women live 14 to 18 years longer after retirement. ^[10] A 10% increase in food prices raises total costs by about 1% for a German but nearly 3% for a Bulgarian, because of the different shares of food spending. ^[11] From January 2024 to January 2025, the share of food spending for Bulgarian families rose by 0.4 percentage points, while in most EU countries it stayed flat or fell, according to Eurostat. ^[12]
