China imposed a 20 per cent income tax on offshore trusts in late July, 2026. ^[1] Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced a strategic development plan focused on financial services, innovation and technology, and education, stated on the eve of the city's first five-year roadmap. ^[2] A prospective longitudinal cohort study of 90 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma undergoing esophagectomy found that a perioperative decline in phase angle of 0.32 degrees or more was independently associated with postoperative sarcopenia. ^[3] Beijing has been stepping up efforts to enforce taxes on offshore income and gains made by Chinese tax residents. ^[4] The new tax targets offshore trusts, which were long viewed as a grey area through which high-net-worth individuals have been harbouring wealth. ^[5] Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu listed four key projects: a Central Gold Exchange System for efficient gold trading, a commodity trade ecosystem to strengthen the city's network, the Hetao Innovation Centre to attract international technology firms, and the Northern Metropolis University City for a global education hub. ^[6] The Hetao technology park already hosts over 100 technology companies and its main building is set for completion by the end of 2025, with an initial occupancy rate of 75% projected. ^[7] The Northern Metropolis university city project will span more than 1,000 hectares, of which 300 hectares will be allocated directly to campuses. ^[8] In contrast to the decline in phase angle, static preoperative phase angle was not significantly associated with postoperative sarcopenia, overall complications, infectious complications, or length of hospital stay. ^[9] The study adjusted for preoperative sarcopenia and nutritional risk using the NRS2002 score, finding an adjusted odds ratio of 4.69 for the association between phase angle decline and postoperative sarcopenia. ^[10] Real estate agents in Singapore see no broad retreat from buyers yet, but wealthy Chinese buyers are rethinking how and where they hold their assets. ^[11] The study utilized internal validation approaches including ridge regression, bootstrap validation, and random forest benchmarking to confirm the robustness of the statistical model. ^[12]
