Haiti is the only country in history to achieve independence through a revolution led by enslaved Black people. ^[1] Haiti proclaimed its independence on January 1, 1804, after a brutal war led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who became the father of the nation. ^[2] In 1825, France demanded a payment of 150 million gold francs from Haiti to secure formal diplomatic recognition, claiming it was compensation for lost slave properties. ^[3] José Martí is widely known for his anti-imperialism, specifically his clear understanding of the danger that the United States represented for the independence of Latin American nations. ^[4] José Martí was the first Latin American thinker to systematically alert about the imperialist threat and call for common struggle against the United States in his journalistic work and other writings. ^[5] In 1802, Napoleon sent General Leclerc to Haiti to prevent independence and restore slavery, but Toussaint Louverture was betrayed, imprisoned, and died in France. ^[6] Martí argued that it is licit and honorable to hate violence and preach against it as long as there is a visible and rational way to obtain justice without violence. ^[7] Martí remains relevant today for organizations fighting against the capitalist system and imperialism due to his example of dedication, self-sacrifice, and political moral transparency. ^[8]
