New South Wales police are investigating the shooting death of a man in Sydney's west as a potential case of mistaken identity, marking the second fatal shooting incident in as many days. ^[1] Police report that eight people have been killed in cases of mistaken identity in Sydney since 2021, and the figure climbs to 13 when counting those targeted as family members or innocent bystanders. ^[2] Police said the property was a location known to police for organised crime, but said the victim has no links that they are aware of to organised crime. ^[3] Supt Simon Glasser stated that there is a possibility that the wrong person has been shot by these offenders. ^[4] The victim, who was yet to be formally identified, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. ^[5] Chris Baghsarian, an 85-year-old grandfather, was kidnapped from his North Ryde home in February 2026 and his remains were found near a golf course in Pitt Town. ^[6] Joshua Macdonald, a 40-year-old tradie and electrical business co-owner, was killed in September 2026 by gunmen in Merrylands West who targeted a property linked to the Alameddine crime network. ^[7] Marco Tapia, a 23-year-old biomedical engineering student, was shot dead in September 2026 by masked intruders while asleep in his bed at the Glen Alpine family home. ^[8]
