According to the Comité Permanente por la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos (CDH), at least 53 cases of forced disappearance have been counted in Ecuador between January 2024 and August 2026, in the context of the internal armed conflict decreed by the government. ^[1] Families of disappeared persons, human rights organizations, and social collectives marched in Quito, Ecuador on 2026-08-31 under the slogan 'Mientras nosotras buscamos, el Estado oculta' to demand truth, justice, and answers on forced disappearance cases. ^[2] Women in Juchitán completed a sewing course at the Casa de la Cultura to learn how to craft the Olán, a fundamental piece of traditional clothing in the Istmo de Tehuantepec. ^[3] Families of disappeared persons in Ecuador denounce that the forced disappearance cases involve members of the Armed Forces. ^[4] The organizing organizations demand that the State report on the whereabouts of the disappeared, investigate the facts, comply with protection measures ordered by international bodies, and guarantee families the right to know the truth. ^[5] Melisa Remetería, a fashion designer and instructor, stated that supporting women through education is the best way to give them an economy and empower those starting their own business ventures. ^[6] Some participants who started with no prior sewing knowledge are now capable of repairing their own clothes, making rabonas, and crafting Olanes for personal use or commercialization. ^[7] The training allows women to reduce household expenses and convert sewing into a new source of income for family sustenance while preserving regional clothing and identity. ^[8]
