Scientists constructed ten giant chambers around a Minnesota peat bog to conduct an experiment on climate change impacts. ^[1] The researchers warmed the peat bog plots by up to 9 degrees Celsius to simulate future climate conditions. ^[2] Within three years of the experiment, every warmed plot switched from storing carbon to releasing it. ^[3] Scientists reported in The Lancet Regional Health - Americas that alcohol-related cancer deaths in the US increased from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023. ^[4] The study indicates that swamps and peatlands play an important role in the global carbon cycle and climate. ^[5] Among women aged 20 to 54, breast cancer was the leading cause of alcohol-related cancer mortality. ^[6] The study analyzed data on cancer incidence and mortality in the US spanning more than 30 years. ^[7] Scientific projections warn that the global temperature limit set by the Paris Agreement may be exceeded within a few years. ^[8] The Paris Agreement is a cooperative framework rather than a binding imposition, and it does not obligate countries to reduce emissions. ^[9] The Paris Agreement, negotiated in 2015 by the international community, set a goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F). ^[10] The United Nations has stated that actions over the past decade have not been influential enough to stop global warming. ^[11]
