In 1905, Prince Colloredo-Mannsfeld released five muskrats (two males, three females) brought from a hunting trip to America into ponds on his estate at Dobříš, about 40 kilometers southwest of Prague, reportedly intending to farm their fur. ^[1] A study in the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society reported that Britain eradicated its muskrat population by 1939 through a sustained trapping campaign after the animals escaped from fur farms in the late 1920s. ^[2] According to the UNL Digital Commons at the University of Nebraska, Prince Colloredo-Mannsfeld brought back five muskrats (two males and three females) from a hunting trip in North America and released them into ponds at his estate near Dobříš, about 40 kilometers southwest of Prague, in 1905. ^[3] The muskrat population in Bohemia reached an estimated two million animals by 1914, less than a decade after the initial release of five animals. ^[4] By 1914, nine years after the release, muskrats had colonized the whole of Bohemia, with an estimated two million animals, leading Central European naturalists to call it a calamity. ^[5] The muskrat's burrowing into earthen flood defenses such as dikes and levees causes damage, prompting the Netherlands to run a permanent trapping program with hundreds of professional trappers removing tens of thousands of animals annually. ^[6]
