A confrontation between SBU officers and members of Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) in Kyiv ended in a shootout on Sept. 1, injuring three HUR service members. ^[1] Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC), denied allegations of contacts with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and involvement in planned assassinations on Sept. 3. ^[2] Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) alleged on Sept. 3 that a specified person, later identified as Kaplunov, had contacts with the FSB while working to prevent an assassination planned for Ukraine's Independence Day. ^[3] On 2026-09-04, a Russian drone struck the central building of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv, across from St. Sophia Cathedral, causing a fire and smoke. ^[4] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on 2026-09-04 that the drone was aimed directly at the office of the head of the SBU, Oleksandr Poklad, who survived the attack. ^[5] Ukraine's Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko stated that two individuals from SBU and HUR were suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 365 and Article 348 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. ^[6] The strike on the SBU building was the first time it has been hit in the four-and-a-half year conflict. ^[7] Ukrainian authorities said 12 people were injured in the attack on the SBU building. ^[8]
