The Carraízo reservoir in Venezuela recorded an increase of 172 centimeters in 24 hours following rainfall associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly. ^[1] The Comité Despertar Cidreño and concerned citizens of the eastern-central mountain municipality of Cidra are inviting the entire community to participate in a peaceful demonstration this Saturday at 9 a.m. in front of the old Cidra City Hall. ^[2] According to data from the Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA), the Carraízo reservoir reached a level of 38.92 meters on Wednesday morning, up from 37.20 meters at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday. ^[3] Governor Jenniffer González announced a temporary pause in water rationing for subscribers supplied by the Carraízo reservoir, effective immediately. ^[4] The rise in the Carraízo reservoir caused it to exceed the 38.50-meter threshold designated as the 'observation' level. ^[5] Organizers argue that the loss of vegetation cover leads to soil erosion and the accumulation of sediments in Lake Cidra, which can progressively reduce the reservoir's storage capacity. ^[6] The demonstration aims to denounce deforestation observed in different sectors of the municipality since the beginning of the administration of Mayor Delvis Pagán Clavijo. ^[7] The organizations believe that the municipality and responsible agencies cannot continue to treat deforestation and the deterioration of the lake as separate issues given the possibility of water rationing in Cidra. ^[8]
