General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, the head of the National Defense Secretariat, spoke at a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Heroico Colegio Militar facilities in Tlalpan. ^[1] Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the Heroico Colegio Militar at its Tlalpan campus in Mexico City. ^[2] Sheinbaum said that Vicente Guerrero, when faced with rewards for abandoning the independence struggle, chose to continue fighting and pronounced 'la Patria es Primero' (the Homeland is First), even against his own father. ^[3] The Heroico Colegio Militar was originally created on October 11, 1823, to train men and women committed to the best causes of the homeland. ^[4] The institution has evolved to align with national policies of equality and inclusion, opening its doors to allow women to enter all branches of the military service. ^[5] Sheinbaum recognized that the armed forces have been present in national defense, internal security, public security, national development, and in supporting the people during earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and other calamities. ^[6] Sheinbaum said the heroism of the armed forces is not in the past but is always present in today's Mexico, in daily service, discipline, silent sacrifice, and the decision to be wherever Mexico needs them. ^[7] Cadets from the Heroico Colegio Militar have represented the Armed Forces and Mexico in military parades in various nations including Chile, China, France, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. ^[8]
