Mexico's Secretariat of Economy reported that imports of Chinese autos to Mexico totaled 158,571 units in the first half of 2026, down 31.1% year-on-year. ^[1] Chilean trade officials and US representatives concluded meetings on September 24-25, 2026, regarding a 12.5% tariff rate imposed by the United States on Chilean exports. ^[2] China's overall exports to Mexico fell 26.3% to US$8.869 billion in the first half of 2026, a loss of US$3.165 billion. ^[3] Mexico's tariffs on imports from countries without free trade agreements, effective January 1, 2026, range from 5% to 50% and cover 1,463 tariff lines across sectors including automotive, textile, footwear, steel, chemicals, furniture, plastics, and toys, aimed at protecting about 350,000 jobs. ^[4] The White House identified over 40 countries with elevated risk of illegal transshipment, including Mexico, Canada, and the EU, estimating base-case annual losses of US$75 billion from Chinese goods entering the U.S. via third parties, which evade tariffs, widen the trade deficit, displace domestic production, reduce GDP growth, and lower federal tax revenue. ^[5] An additional 40.3% of the export basket, including salmon, fresh grapes, wine, frozen fruits, fresh blueberries, and fish meal, is subject to a 12.5% surcharge. ^[6] Jeffrey Goettman, the number two official at the US Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), returned to the United States to analyze Chile's arguments for exempting specific products from the surcharge. ^[7] Paula Estévez, the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations (Subrei), met with leaders from the Confederation of Production and Commerce (CPC) and the Sociedad de Fomento Fabril (Sofofa) to discuss the tariff process. ^[8]
