The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Friday to promote more accurate cartographic depictions of the world's continents, as requested by Togo and many African countries. ^[1] The UN General Assembly will vote on Friday on a resolution to formally phase out the traditional Mercator map in favor of one that more accurately displays Africa's size. ^[2] The UN resolution aims to limit the use of 16th-century Mercator maps, which distort continent sizes; for instance, Greenland appears nearly equal to Africa although Africa is 14 times larger. ^[3] The United States, the only country that voted against the resolution, argued that it promotes an 'ideological agenda' and is a 'distraction' from real problems of international peace, prosperity, or good relations. ^[4] Togo's Foreign Minister Robert Dussey said Togo will be the first country to change its geography books and will push other governments, schools, international organizations, and technology companies to promote the changes. ^[5] Robert Dussey stated that the discussion regarding the map change is scientific rather than political because there is scientific proof supporting the reality of Africa's size. ^[6] Robert Dussey, Togo's foreign affairs minister, said the resolution was sponsored by Togo and backed by countries including the African Union's 54 other member states. ^[7] The 1569 map by Gerardus Mercator has remained the global standard for nearly five centuries, though it makes regions near the equator appear significantly smaller than they are. ^[8]
