Taibat Yusuf, an agricultural economics professor at Kwara State University (KWASU) in Malete, urged Nigerian authorities in her 23rd inaugural lecture to reform inheritance laws to guarantee women's rights to own and inherit land regardless of marital status and to promote joint land ownership for married couples. ^[1] In 2017, a doctor in Nigeria diagnosed the author, Okwu, with breast cancer at age 32 and recommended a mastectomy. ^[2] Since 2022, Okwu has shared photographs of her surgical scars on social media to challenge the stigma and silence surrounding breast cancer in Nigeria. ^[3] Yusuf noted that with an estimated 140 million Nigerians living below the poverty line, coordinated action across sectors is urgent, and closing the gender gap in agriculture is an essential strategy for transforming Nigeria's agricultural economy and improving food security. ^[4] Yusuf recommended reforming agricultural extension services, including recruiting more female extension agents, offering flexible training schedules accommodating women's domestic duties, and using mobile platforms to deliver advisory services in local languages. ^[5] Yusuf said discriminatory land ownership practices remain one of the major obstacles preventing women farmers from accessing credit, agricultural inputs, and other productive resources. ^[6] After the mastectomy, Okwu refused recommended chemotherapy following advice from a visiting pathologist friend who claimed the surgery was sufficient. ^[7] Breast cancer represents about 23% of all new cancer cases in Nigeria and has the highest mortality rate in Africa due to late presentation and stigma. ^[8]
