A survey by AtlasIntel conducted in Brazil shows current President Lula da Silva leading Flávio Bolsonaro 47.1% to 42.6% in a hypothetical second-round runoff. ^[1] Hyundai Motor Co. reported that its vehicle sales fell 14 percent in August compared to the same period last year due to partial strikes and fewer working days. ^[2] The company sold 288,574 vehicles in August, a decrease from 336,141 units sold during the same month a year earlier. ^[3] Augusto Cury, a 67-year-old psychiatrist and bestselling author, entered the Brazilian presidential race and surged to third place in polls published on a Monday. ^[4] A different survey conducted by Nexus and funded by BTG Pactual indicates a much closer race with 46% for Lula and 45% for Flávio Bolsonaro in the second round. ^[5] Independent candidate Augusto Cury, running for the Avante party, saw his vote intention rise from 1.6% in mid-July to 7.6% in a short period. ^[6] Journalist Eleonora Gosman explained that the AtlasIntel survey places Lula at 47.1% and Flávio Bolsonaro at 42.6% in the second round. ^[7] Domestic sales plunged 41 percent to 34,333 units from 58,330 units, while overseas sales declined 8.5 percent to 254,241 from 277,811. ^[8] Hyundai Motor plans to promote new models, including the New Grandeur sedan and the all-new Avante compact, to increase its market share for the rest of the year. ^[9] A Nexus survey commissioned by BTG Pactual reported that Augusto Cury received 11% of the vote intention, up from 2% in the previous measurement. ^[10] An AtlasIntel/Bloomberg survey placed Augusto Cury at 7.8% of the vote intention, compared to 1.6% in the prior measurement. ^[11] The Eurasia Group stated that for Augusto Cury to become a real threat to Flávio Bolsonaro, he should approach 15% by mid-September. ^[12]
