The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on a resolution calling for the adoption of the Equal Earth map projection to replace the traditional Mercator projection. ^[1] The draft resolution asks governments, schools, international organizations, and technology companies to adopt the Equal Earth projection and other equal-area maps wherever the true scale of continents matters. ^[2] The resolution does not seek to ban the Mercator projection outright but aims to establish more proportionally accurate maps as a new global norm. ^[3] The UN resolution was brought by Togo with the African Union's backing, according to Togo's foreign minister Robert Dussey. ^[4] A team of cartographers created the Equal Earth projection in 2018 as an equal-area world map intended to correct the size distortions of the Mercator projection. ^[5] The African Union's 54 member states adopted the Equal Earth projection in February. ^[6] The Mercator map, designed in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator to aid European navigation, distorts land sizes by making countries near the equator appear smaller and those nearer the poles appear larger. ^[7] The UN voted to adopt the new world map in a non-binding vote, which will lead to changes in maps used by institutions around the world. ^[8]
