A group of peers in the UK Parliament is calling for the British government to be able to deactivate powerful AI systems and switch off the country's data centres in the event of the tech posing a threat to national security. ^[1] Lord Tim Clement-Jones, a Liberal Democrat, proposed an amendment to the UK's Cyber Security and Resilience Bill to create a 'vital safety net' for halting runaway AI systems. ^[2] If the AI Security Bill is successful, it would make the UK the first G7 country to bring in legislation which would effectively halt the development of superintelligent AI. ^[3] Lord Tim Clement-Jones of the Liberal Democrats proposed the measure as an amendment to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill which is currently making its way through Parliament. ^[4] Lord Tim Clement-Jones said the proposed tool would enable the building of a vital safety net and provide a democratically accountable means to halt a runaway system before it can compromise critical national infrastructure. ^[5] Labour MP Alex Sobel plans to introduce an AI Security Bill later in the month to effectively halt the development of superintelligent AI. ^[6] The proposed amendment would provide a democratically accountable means to halt a runaway AI system before it compromises critical national infrastructure. ^[7] The UK AI Security Bill would make the United Kingdom the first G7 country to introduce such legislation. ^[8]
