A 17-year-old transgender teen named Johan Alexis Naranjo Cuesta was found murdered inside his home in the La Iguaná neighborhood of Medellín, Colombia. ^[1] Authorities found no white weapon or firearm wounds, but noted multiple blunt force injuries and lacerations on the neck caused by fingernails. ^[2] The victim's mother discovered the body on the floor covered by a sheet, which had been used to suffocate him. ^[3] Witnesses reported seeing a dark-skinned man with a hooded head fleeing the residence in the early hours of Saturday morning. ^[4] Caribe Afirmativo, an organization working for LGBTIQ+ rights in Colombia, condemned the homicide and asked the Fiscalía General de la Nación to investigate with a sexual and gender diversity focus to determine whether prejudice was a motive. ^[5] Some neighbors told investigators they saw an unknown man leaving the house during the early morning, but his identity and relationship to Johan have not been established. ^[6] The mother found Johan with several injuries and a pillowcase tied around his mouth; he was taken to Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe but arrived without vital signs. ^[7]
