The Academy of Political and Social Sciences of Venezuela declared a partial reform to the Supreme Tribunal of Justice law unconstitutional on August 31, 2026. ^[1] The National Assembly, which holds an officialist majority, approved by unanimity the Partial Reform Project of the Organic Law of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice. ^[2] The opposition sector participating in the dialogue table announced on September 1, 2026, that the Judicial Appointments Committee for selecting new magistrates of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice has been formed. ^[3] The Academy argued that the Judicial Postulations Committee must be integrated exclusively by civil society representatives to ensure impartiality. ^[4] The Academy stated that the reform violates Article 270 of the Constitution of Venezuela. ^[5] The reform approved by the National Assembly in first discussion on August 27, 2026, restructured the Preliminary Commission to include 11 National Assembly deputies alongside 12 civil society representatives. ^[6] The opposition sector stated that the formation of the Judicial Appointments Committee represents a step toward building an independent Supreme Tribunal of Justice serving the Constitution and all Venezuelans. ^[7] The proposed reform maintains 11 deputies within the 23-member committee, alongside 12 civil society representatives, which critics argue equates public officials with civil society members. ^[8]
